BCIV-082: General Principles of Building Construction
Course Objectives:
- Develop the ability to test construction materials.
- Gain knowledge of various techniques of damp proofing and waterproofing in building works.
- Learn about the principles of estimation.
- Understand the functioning of the Public Works Department.
UNIT-I: Construction Materials
Bricks: Classification of bricks, constituents of good brick earth, harmful ingredients, manufacturing of bricks, testing of bricks.
Cement: Cement composition, types of cement, manufacturing of ordinary Portland cement, testing of cement, special types of cement, storage of cement.
Timber: Classification of timber, structure of timber, seasoning of timber, defects in timber, fireproofing of timber.
Paints and Varnishes: Basic constituents of paints, types of paints, constituents of varnishes, characteristics, and types of varnishes.
UNIT-II: Building Construction
Stone masonry
Classification of stone masonry
Brick masonry: Bonds in brickwork, defects in brick masonry
Scaffolding and its types
Centering and shuttering
Drainage and sanitation requirements
Curing
Damp-Proofing and Water-Proofing: Defects and causes of dampness, prevention of dampness, materials used, damp-proofing treatment in buildings, and waterproofing treatment of roofs.
Floors: Floor structures, various types of floorings.
UNIT-III: Estimate
Principles of estimation
Units, items of work
Different kinds of estimates
Different methods of estimation
Estimation of materials in single-room buildings, two-roomed buildings with different sections of walls, foundation, floors, and roofs
