BCSE-557 (Quantum Computing)

Course Objectives:

i) To introduce the fundamentals of quantum computing.

ii) The problem-solving approach using finite dimensional mathematics


Unit 1: 

Foundations of quantum theory. States, observables, measurement andunitary evolution Qubits versus classical bits, Classical gates versus quantum gates, spin-half systemsand photon polarisations. Pure and mixed states, density matrices Complex numbers and its geometrical representations. Complex vector spaces, Inner products and Hilbert spaces, Hermitian and unitary matrices, Tensor products of vector spaces.


Unit 2: 

Deterministic Systems. Probabilistic descriptions and Quantum systems, Schrodinger's time dependent equation. Wave nature of Particles, state vector, operators, postulates of quantum mechanics. Dirac formalism, Stern-Gerlach experiment, electron spin, superposition of states. entanglement


Unit 3:

Deutsch's Algorithm, Deutsch-Jozsa Algorithm, Simon's periodicity algorithm. Grover's search algorithm. Shor's Factoring algorithm


Unit 4:

Quantum programming languages. Probabilistic and Quantum computations, introduction to quantum cryptography and quantum information theory. Dense coding, teleportation and quantum cryptography, Turing machines and computational complexity. Reversible computation. FFT and prime factorization. Quantum error correction and fault tolerant computation


Course Outcomes: 

After completion of this course, student is able to explain and use:

1) Basics of complex vector spaces.

ii) Quantum mechanics as applied in Quantum computing iii) Architecture and algorithms iv) Fundamentals of Quantum computations.
