BCIV-084: Rural Technology and Community Development (Common to All Branches)
Couse Objectives:
01 To plan Rural Development strategy.
02 To promote low-cost rural housing.
03 To design Water Supply and Rural Sanitation
04 To design Low-Cost Roads and rogation
Unit 1:
Rural Development Planning: Principles factors of rural planning- Decisive factors, Population data, Location of village, General factors, Special technical data, Village layout plans and arrangements, Requirements of rural dwellings Classification of rural dwellings, principals of functional design, Architectural considerations for rural housing
Unit 2:
Low Cost Housing: Low cost eco-friendly construction materials for housing, Alternative building materials- soil-stabilized mud blocks, Ferro-cement & fly ash. Composite materials, Non erodible mud plaster, autoclaved calcium silicate bricks and Water-proof and fire-retardant roof treatment for thatch roofs Pre-cast stone masonry, Rat trap bond for walls, Thin R C. ribbed slab for floors & roofs pre-cast RC, channel, pre-cast RC flooring/ roofing scheme, L-Pan roofing scheme, Lifting devices.
Unit 3:
Rural Sanitation and Water Supply System: Sources of water Quality standards of drinking water, Storage and distribution for rural water supply works, basic design principles of treatment-low cost water treatment technologies Water conservation, rainwater harvesting. Hand pumps-types, installation operation and maintenance of Mark-ll hand pumps, drainage in rural areas, construction of low cost latrines- simple & VIP 2 pit pour flush water seal, septic tank, Biogas plant-its types low cost community & individual Garbage disposal systems, Cattle shed management, Ferro-cement water storage tanks.
Unit 4:
Low Cost Transportation: Broad categories of Pavement Layers, types of Granular Sub-Bases, Soil stabilization-Mechanical stabilization, Lime stabilization, Cement stabilization, Lime-Fly ash stabilization, Black cotton soil Road constructions, Surface Treatments for roads in rural areas, Modified Penetration Macadam Crusher run macadam, Use of local materials Guidelines for Surfacing for Rural Road. Low Cost Irrigation: Design Consideration and construction of tube-well, drip & sprinkler irrigation systems. Watershed and catchments area development problems and features of watershed management, watershed structures
