Adding Numbers
We have learned how addition works with objects, pictures and simple addition facts. Now we can add numbers directly.
We will begin with simple addition problems and use counting and number patterns to find the answer.
Learning Objectives
- Add simple numbers.
- Use counting on to add numbers.
- Solve basic addition sentences.
- Find the sum of two numbers.
- Check addition answers.
Adding Two Numbers
To add two numbers, combine their values and find the total.
The sum of 3 and 4 is 7.
Counting On
Counting on is a useful way to add small numbers. Start with one number and count forward by the amount being added.
Start at 5 and count three more:
Adding Zero
When we add zero to a number, the number stays the same.
Zero means that nothing is being added to the number.
Examples
Checking Your Answer
After solving an addition problem, check whether your answer makes sense.
If we count four objects and then add three more, there should be seven objects altogether.
Common Mistakes
- Counting the wrong number of steps forward.
- Forgetting one of the numbers.
- Writing the wrong total.
- Adding a number to zero incorrectly.
Practice
1. 2 + 4 = ___
2. 3 + 5 = ___
3. 6 + 2 = ___
4. 7 + 1 = ___
5. 9 + 0 = ___
Try It Yourself
Write five simple addition problems. Solve them first by counting on and then check each answer using objects or pictures.
Quick Revision
- Addition combines numbers.
- Counting on can help solve addition problems.
- Zero does not change a number when added to it.
- The answer to an addition problem is the sum.
What Comes Next?
Addition is not only used in mathematics exercises. You can also use addition to solve many situations in everyday life.
