Addition Revision
Addition means putting quantities together. We have used addition to count objects, combine groups and solve everyday problems.
In this lesson, you will revise simple addition and practise using it in different situations.
Learning Objectives
- Recall what addition means.
- Add small numbers.
- Use objects and pictures to understand addition.
- Solve simple addition problems.
Understanding Addition
When we add, we combine two or more quantities to find the total.
Two objects and three objects make five objects altogether.
Addition with Numbers
We can add numbers using the addition sign +. The answer to an addition problem is called the sum.
Addition in Everyday Situations
We use addition when two groups are put together or when something is added to an existing group.
There are 4 books on a table. 2 more books are placed on the table.
4 + 2 = 6
Answer: There are 6 books.
Common Mistakes
- Count each object only once.
- Make sure you are putting the quantities together.
- Read the problem carefully before choosing addition.
- Check the answer by counting again when needed.
Practice
1. What is 2 + 3?
2. What is 5 + 4?
3. What is 6 + 2?
4. There are 3 red balls and 2 blue balls. How many balls are there altogether?
5. What is 4 + 5?
Try It Yourself
Take two small groups of objects such as pencils, blocks or toys. Count both groups and add the numbers together to find the total.

Next Step
Now that you have revised addition, the next lesson will revise subtraction and how we use it to find what remains.
