Addition Using Pictures
Pictures can help us understand addition when we cannot use real objects.
We can draw or look at pictures of objects, count each group, combine the groups and find the total.
Learning Objectives
- Understand addition using pictures.
- Count objects shown in pictures.
- Combine picture groups.
- Write addition sentences from pictures.
- Find the total shown by a picture.
Pictures Can Show Groups
A picture can represent the same groups that we used with real objects.
There are 3 apples in the first group and 2 in the second group. Together there are 5 apples.
Count the Pictures
First count the pictures in the first group. Then count the pictures in the second group.
First group = 4
Second group = 1
Finding the Total from Pictures
After counting both groups, put the quantities together to find the total.
Drawing Pictures to Add
We can also draw simple objects to help solve an addition problem.
Draw 3 circles and 2 more circles.
Pictures and Number Sentences
A picture shows the quantities, while an addition sentence shows the same idea using numbers.
