Creating Simple Patterns
We have learned how to recognise and complete patterns. Now we can use the same ideas to create our own patterns.
A good pattern should follow a clear rule or repeat in a consistent way.
Learning Objectives
- Create simple repeating patterns.
- Use objects, colours and shapes to create patterns.
- Create simple number patterns.
- Explain the rule of a pattern.
Creating a Two-Part Pattern
Start with two objects or shapes and repeat them in the same order.
The rule is:
Creating a Three-Part Pattern
We can also create a pattern using three different items.
The repeating group is triangle, circle and square.
Creating a Colour Pattern
Colours can also be used to create patterns.
The rule is red, green, red, green.
Creating a Number Pattern
Number patterns can be created by following a simple counting rule.
Each number increases by 2.
Creating a Pattern with Everyday Objects
You can use pencils, books, blocks or other safe objects to create patterns.
The pencil and book repeat in the same order.
Making a Clear Pattern
When creating a pattern:
- Choose the objects, shapes or numbers.
- Decide the rule.
- Repeat the rule in the same order.
- Check that the pattern stays consistent.
Explaining Your Pattern
A good way to check your pattern is to explain its rule.
Rule: Circle, square, circle, square, repeating.
Common Mistakes
- Changing the order without a rule.
- Creating a sequence that does not repeat consistently.
- Forgetting the chosen pattern rule.
- Being unable to explain what repeats.
Practice
1. Create a pattern using two shapes.
2. Create a pattern using three colours.
3. Create a repeating pattern using two objects.
4. Create a number pattern that increases by 2.
5. Explain the rule of one pattern you created.
Try It Yourself
Create a pattern using objects, shapes, colours or numbers. Show it to someone and ask them what should come next.
Quick Revision
- Patterns can be created using many different things.
- A pattern should follow a clear rule.
- The rule should stay consistent.
- We should be able to explain what repeats or changes.
Chapter Complete
You have now completed Chapter 5 — Patterns.
You learned what patterns are, how numbers and shapes can form patterns, how to complete missing parts and how to create your own simple patterns.
These skills will help you notice order, relationships and sequences as you continue learning mathematics.
