Step 1 — Read the Sentence
First, read the sentence carefully.
Step 2 — Find the Naming Word
Ask: Who or what is the sentence about?
Dog is the naming word.
Step 3 — Ask What It Is Like
Now ask: What is the dog like?
The answer is big. So big is the describing word.

The happy girl smiles.
The tall boy runs.
The describing words are red, small, happy and tall.
A Simple Way to Find Them
When you want to find a describing word, follow these steps:
- Read the sentence.
- Find the person, animal or thing.
- Ask: What is it like?
- Find the word that gives the answer.

- Do not choose the naming word as the describing word.
- Do not choose an action word just because it is easy to find.
- Ask “What is it like?” to help find the describing word.
