Number Order
Numbers follow a particular order. In the previous lessons, we learned how to count numbers and compare them. Now we will learn how to arrange numbers in the correct order.
Understanding number order helps us know which number comes before or after another number.
Learning Objectives
After completing this lesson, you will be able to:
- Understand the order of numbers.
- Arrange numbers from smaller to greater.
- Arrange numbers from greater to smaller.
- Identify numbers that come before or after another number.
- Use counting to arrange numbers correctly.
- Find missing numbers in a sequence.
What Is Number Order?
Number order means arranging numbers according to their position in the counting sequence.
This is the normal counting order. Each number comes after the number before it.
Numbers from Small to Large
When we arrange numbers from the smallest number to the largest number, we put them in increasing order.
Here, the numbers become larger as we move from left to right.
5, 2, 8
The correct order is:
Numbers from Large to Small
We can also arrange numbers from the largest number to the smallest number.
Here, the numbers become smaller as we move from left to right.
3, 9, 5
The correct order is:
Using a Number Line
A number line can help us understand number order.
As we move to the right, the numbers become greater. As we move to the left, the numbers become smaller.
Finding the Smallest Number
To find the smallest number in a group, compare the numbers and choose the one with the smallest value.
4, 7, 2
The smallest number is 2.
Finding the Largest Number
To find the largest number in a group, compare the numbers and choose the one with the greatest value.
5, 9, 3
The largest number is 9.
Finding Missing Numbers
We can use number order to find a missing number in a sequence.
The missing number is 3.
Example
Arrange the following numbers from smallest to largest:
First find the smallest number, then continue with the next larger numbers.
This is the correct increasing order.
Common Mistakes
Starting with the Wrong Number
When arranging numbers from smallest to largest, always start with the smallest number.
Mixing the Two Directions
Decide whether the question asks for smallest to largest or largest to smallest before arranging the numbers.
Skipping a Number
When working with a counting sequence, check that no number has been missed.
Practice
4, 1, 3
2, 8, 5
6, 2, 9
3, 7, 5
6, 7, ___, 9, 10
Try It Yourself
Choose five numbers between 1 and 10. Write them in random order. Then arrange them from smallest to largest.
Next, arrange the same numbers from largest to smallest.
Quick Revision
- Numbers have a fixed order.
- Numbers can be arranged from smallest to largest.
- Numbers can also be arranged from largest to smallest.
- A number line can help us understand number order.
- We can find missing numbers using the counting sequence.
- Always check the direction before arranging numbers.
What Comes Next?
Now that you understand number order, the next lesson will help you identify the number that comes before, after or between other numbers.
