Number Revision
Numbers help us count objects, compare quantities and understand order. In this lesson, you will revise the important number ideas learned throughout Class 1 Mathematics.
Take your time with each question and remember to check your answers carefully.
Learning Objectives
- Revise counting numbers.
- Recall number order.
- Compare numbers.
- Recognise simple number patterns.
- Find missing numbers.
Counting and Number Order
Counting helps us find how many objects there are. Numbers also have a fixed order. When we count forward, the numbers increase.
When we count backward, the numbers become smaller.
Comparing Numbers
We can compare two numbers to find which number is greater, which number is smaller or whether the numbers are equal.
Remember that the greater than sign means the first number is greater, while the less than sign means the first number is smaller.
Number Patterns and Missing Numbers
A number pattern follows a rule. We can use the rule to find a missing number or decide what comes next.
The missing number is 5.
The next number is 8 because the pattern increases by 2.
Common Mistakes
- Do not skip a number while counting.
- Check which number is greater before using the comparison sign.
- Look for the rule before completing a number pattern.
- Check the numbers around a missing number carefully.
Practice
1. What number comes after 15?
2. What number comes before 10?
3. Which is greater: 9 or 6?
4. Find the missing number: 5, 6, __, 8.
5. What comes next: 2, 4, 6, __?
Try It Yourself
Write five numbers between 1 and 20. Put them in order from smallest to greatest. Then create one simple number pattern with a missing number.
Quick Revision
- Numbers have a fixed order.
- Numbers can be compared as greater, smaller or equal.
- Patterns follow rules.
- Missing numbers can be found by looking at the sequence.
Next Step
Now that you have revised numbers, the next lesson will revise addition and the different ways we use it.
