Shapes and Measurement Revision

Revise common shapes and simple measurement ideas such as length, height, weight and capacity.

Shapes and Measurement Revision

We see different shapes and sizes around us. Mathematics helps us recognise shapes and compare objects using simple measurement ideas.

In this lesson, you will revise common shapes and ideas about length, height, weight and capacity.

Learning Objectives

  • Recognise common shapes.
  • Recall the sides and corners of simple shapes.
  • Compare length and height.
  • Compare weight and capacity.

Common Shapes

We have learned about common shapes such as circles, squares, rectangles and triangles.

○ □ ▭ △

Circle, square, rectangle and triangle.

  • A circle is round and has no corners.
  • A square has four equal sides and four corners.
  • A rectangle has four sides and four corners.
  • A triangle has three sides and three corners.

Comparing Length and Height

We can compare objects by looking at their length or height. Words such as longer, shorter, taller and shorter help us describe the comparison.

Longer ↔ Shorter
Taller ↔ Shorter

For example, a ruler may be longer than an eraser, while a tree may be taller than a person.

Comparing Weight

Weight tells us how heavy or light something is. We can compare two objects to decide which one is heavier or lighter.

Heavy ↔ Light

A school bag filled with books is usually heavier than an empty pencil box.

Comparing Capacity

Capacity tells us how much a container can hold. We can compare containers to see which one can hold more or less.

More Capacity ↔ Less Capacity

A large bottle can usually hold more water than a small cup.

Common Mistakes

  • Do not confuse a square with every four-sided shape.
  • Use longer and shorter when comparing length.
  • Use taller and shorter when comparing height.
  • Remember that capacity is about how much a container can hold.

Practice

1. How many sides does a triangle have?

2. Which shape is round and has no corners?

3. Which is longer: a ruler or a small eraser?

4. Which is heavier: a full school bag or a pencil?

5. Which can hold more water: a large bottle or a small cup?

Try It Yourself

Find four objects around you. Identify the shape of each object and compare two of them by length, height or weight.

Quick Revision

  • Different shapes have different properties.
  • Length can be compared using longer and shorter.
  • Height can be compared using taller and shorter.
  • Weight can be compared using heavier and lighter.
  • Capacity tells us how much a container can hold.

Next Step

Now that you have revised shapes and measurement, the next lesson will revise time and money.
