What Is Addition?
Addition is a way of finding how many things there are when two or more groups are put together.
We use addition when we combine quantities. For example, if you have 2 pencils and receive 3 more pencils, you can add the two groups to find the total number of pencils.
Learning Objectives
- Understand what addition means.
- Understand addition as putting groups together.
- Recognise the plus sign.
- Write simple addition sentences.
- Understand the meaning of the answer in an addition problem.
What Does Addition Mean?
Addition means putting quantities together to find the total.
There are 2 objects in the first group and 3 objects in the second group. When we put them together, there are 5 objects.
The Plus Sign
We use the plus sign (+) to show that we are adding numbers.
For example:
Parts of an Addition Sentence
An addition sentence contains numbers and symbols that tell us what to add and what the total is.
3 and 4 are the numbers being added.
+ tells us to add.
= tells us that both sides have the same value.
7 is the total.
Putting Two Groups Together
Imagine that there are 3 apples in one group and 2 apples in another group.
When the two groups are combined, there are 5 apples altogether.
Counting After Combining
One way to understand addition is to put the groups together and count all the objects.
Four objects and two more objects make six objects altogether.
Addition Can Make a Bigger Quantity
When we add a positive number to another number, the total tells us how many objects or things there are after combining the groups.
We started with 5 and added 2 more, giving a total of 7.
Examples
Common Mistakes
- Forgetting that the plus sign means add.
- Counting only one group instead of both groups.
- Writing the wrong total after combining the groups.
- Confusing the plus sign with another mathematical symbol.
Practice
1. What does addition mean?
2. What sign is used for addition?
3. Complete: 2 + 3 = ___.
4. Complete: 4 + 1 = ___.
5. What is the total of 3 and 3?
Try It Yourself
Take two small groups of objects. Count each group, put them together and count the total.
Quick Revision
- Addition means putting quantities together.
- The plus sign is +.
- The result of addition is the total or sum.
- Objects can help us understand addition.
- 3 + 2 = 5 means 3 and 2 together make 5.
What Comes Next?
Now that you understand what addition means, you will use real objects to practise putting groups together and finding totals.
