Parts of a Computer
A computer is made up of different parts. Each part has a particular job and helps us use the computer.
Some common computer parts are the monitor, keyboard, mouse and speakers. Other devices, such as a printer, can also be connected to a computer.
Learning Objectives
- Recognise common parts of a computer.
- Learn the basic purpose of each part.
- Understand that different parts have different jobs.
- Identify computer parts in everyday use.
The Monitor
The monitor is the screen of a computer. It displays text, pictures, videos and other information.
We look at the monitor to see what the computer displays.
The Keyboard
A keyboard has many keys. We use it to type letters, numbers and other characters and to give certain instructions to the computer.
The keyboard helps us enter letters and numbers into a computer.
The Mouse
A mouse is a pointing device. We can move it to control the pointer on the screen and use its buttons to select or open items.
A mouse helps us control the pointer on the computer screen.
Speakers and Printer
Speakers help a computer produce sound. A printer can produce a paper copy of information from a computer.
- Speakers → Sound
- Printer → Paper Copy
Common Mistakes
- Do not call every computer part a keyboard.
- Remember that the monitor is used to display information.
- Do not confuse the mouse with the pointer shown on the screen.
- Different computer parts have different purposes.
Practice
1. Which part shows pictures and text?
2. Which part is used for typing?
3. Which device is used to control the pointer?
4. Which part helps produce sound?
5. Which device can make a paper copy?
Try It Yourself
If you have access to a computer, look at it carefully and identify the monitor, keyboard and mouse. Ask an adult to help you identify any other connected devices.
Quick Revision
- The monitor displays information.
- The keyboard is used for typing.
- The mouse controls the pointer.
- Speakers produce sound.
- A printer can produce a paper copy.
