Lesson 6 — Other Common Devices

Learn about webcams, microphones, headphones and storage devices and their basic uses with computers in Class 1.

Other Common Devices

A computer can work with many different devices. Besides the monitor, keyboard, mouse, speakers and printer, other devices can also be connected to a computer for different purposes.

Some devices help us enter information, some help us store information and others help us connect or interact with a computer.

Learning Objectives

  • Recognise some other common computer devices.
  • Understand the basic purpose of different devices.
  • Identify devices used for input, storage or other computer tasks.
  • Understand that not every computer setup has the same devices.

Webcam

A webcam is a camera that can be used with a computer. It can capture pictures or video and is often used for video communication.

Webcam → Capture → Picture or Video

A webcam can capture images and video for computer use.

Microphone

A microphone is an input device that allows a computer to receive sound. It can be used to record a voice or communicate through supported applications.

Voice → Microphone → Computer

A microphone helps enter sound into a computer.

Headphones

Headphones are used to listen to sound from a computer. They can allow one person to listen without using external speakers.

Computer → Headphones → Sound

Headphones provide another way to hear computer audio.

Storage Devices

Some devices are used to store or carry digital information. A USB flash drive is one example of a storage device.

Information → Storage Device → Information

Storage devices can be used to keep or transfer digital information.

Different Devices, Different Jobs

Computer devices are designed for different purposes. A webcam captures video, a microphone receives sound, headphones provide audio output and a storage device can store information.

Not every computer needs every device. The devices used depend on what a person needs to do.

Common Mistakes

  • Do not think that every computer has the same devices.
  • Do not confuse a microphone with speakers.
  • Remember that a webcam captures images or video.
  • Do not remove storage devices without following the proper steps.
  • Ask an adult before connecting or removing unfamiliar devices.

Practice

1. What is a webcam used for?

2. What does a microphone receive?

3. What are headphones used for?

4. Name one storage device.

5. Do all computers need the same devices?

Try It Yourself

With an adult, look at a computer or laptop and identify any devices connected to it. Try to explain what each device is used for.

Quick Revision

  • A webcam can capture pictures and video.
  • A microphone can receive sound.
  • Headphones allow us to hear computer sound.
  • Storage devices can store or carry digital information.
  • Different devices perform different jobs.

Next Step

You have now learned about several common computer parts and devices. The next chapter will teach you how to use a computer mouse, including moving the pointer, clicking and dragging.
