Seibei was a twelve years old boy, and he was still in primary school. He lived with his parents in a small harbor town in Japan. He was passionately fond of collecting gourds. On his way back home from school, he would wander along the streets of the town looking for a gourd of his choice. He had come to know of every place in the town where gourds were sold. If he found a gourd he liked, he bought it for a few sen. and brought it home. He liked only even and symmetrical gourds.
Preparing a gourd: In the evening Seibei would sit cross-legged in the comer of the living room. He would first make a neat hole in the top of the gourd, and take out the seeds. Then he applied tea leaves to get rid of the unpleasant gourd-smell.
When he had finished treating it, he poured in a little sake and stopped the hole with a cork stopper. Then he would wrap it in a towel and put it in a tin. Then he put the whole of this in the charcoal footwarmer.
The next morning he would take out the gourd and hung it in the sun to dry. Then he spent days polishing its surface with a little sake.
The Belkin gourd: One evening while Seibei was polishing one of his gourds, his father and his father’s friend were discussing gourds. They talked of Belkin's gourd. It was kept at the agriculture fair. It had been a sensation. Siebe's father and his friend had also seen it. They said it was a beautiful gourd. Seibei too had been to see it. He remarked it was a clumsy big thing. His father rebuked him for making these comments. His father discouraged him too. His father’s friend advised him to collect one or two unusual gourds. Just making a collection was of no use.
Seibei finds a gourd of his choice: One-day Seibei saw an old woman selling fruit and vegetables. She had a string of gourds too. Seibei saw among them a small gourd. He was excited. The woman offered it for ten sen. Seibei did not have die money. He asked the woman to hold the gourd for him. He ran home to bring the money. He bought the gourd.
The gourd causes trouble: Seibei was engrossed with polishing the gourd all the time. He even took it to school. It was the lesson of ethics but Seibei was polishing the gourd under his seat. The teacher belonged to another part of Japan. He disapproved collection of gourds. He was angry with Seibei and confiscated the gourd.
Seibei’s father smashes all the gourds: The teacher went to Seibei’s home. Seibei’s father worked in a carpenter’s shop. He had not come home yet. The teacher complained against Seibei to his mother. He told her that it was the parents’ responsibility to keep children away from stupid pastimes.
When Seibei’s father came home, he learned what the teacher had said. He rebuked Seibei and beat him. Then he smashed all the gourds that Seibei had polished with great care. This was the end of Seibei’s passion for Collecting gourds.
The confiscated gourd: The teacher gave the confiscated gourd to a porter who kept it in his hut for some time. One day the porter was in need of money. He took the gourd to a Curio-dealer. After some hard bargaining, the Curio-dealer paid fifty Yen for the gourd to the porter.
But the porter kept it a secret. Later the Curio dealer sold the gourd to a wealthy collector for six hundred yen. Seibei takes to painting pictures: Seibei could not collect gourds any longer. He now took to painting pictures, though his father often discourages him and rebukes him.

सेबे बारह वर्ष का लड़का था, और वह अभी प्राथमिक पाठशाला में पढ़ता था।
वह अपने माता-पिता के साथ एक छोटे-से बन्दरगाह वाले नगर में रहता था। उसे तुम्बे संग्रह करने की धुन थी। स्कूल से घर आते समय वह तुम्बों की खोज में नगर की सड़कों पर अपनी वसन्द का तुम्बा खोजने के लिए घूमा करता था। उसे उन सब स्थानों का पता चल गया था जहाँ तुम्बे बिकते थे । यदि उसे अपनी पसन्द का तुम्बा मिल जाता था, वह कुछ सेन में खरीद लेता था और उसे घर ले आता था। उसे केवल साफ-सुथरे और सुडौल तुम्बे ही अच्छे लगते थे।
तुम्बा तैयार करना-सायं के समय सेबे बैठक के कमरे के कोने में पालथी मार कर बैठ जाता था। पहले वह तुम्बे के सिर में एक साफ छिद्र बनाता था और बीज बाहर निकालता था। फिर वह तुम्बे की गंध दूर करने के लिए चाय की पत्तियाँ रगड़ता था। जब यह काम पूरा हो जाता था, तो वह थोड़ा-सा सेक उसके अन्दर डाल देता था और छिद्र को कार्क की डाट से बन्द कर देता था। फिर वह उसे तौलिए में लपेट कर एक टिन में रखता था, और इन सबको कोयले के पाँव गर्म करने वाली अंगीठी पर रख देता था।
अगली प्रातः वह तुम्बा बाहर निकालता था, तो उसे सूखने के लिए धूप में लटका देता था। फिर उसे थोड़े-से सेक से पॉलिश करने में कई दिन व्यतीत कर देता था।
बेकिन का तुम्बा-एक दिन जब सेबे अपना एक तुम्बा पॉलिश कर रहा था, उसके पिता अपने एक मित्र के साथ तुम्बों की चर्चा कर रहे थे। वे बेकिन के तुम्बे के बारे में बातें करने लगे। उसे एक कृषि मेले में रखा गया था। उसने धूम मचा दी थी। सेबे के पिता और उसके मित्र ने भी उसे देखा था। वे बोले वह बहुत ही सुन्दर था। सेबे ने भी उसे देखा था। उसने टिप्पणी कर दी कि वह बेडौल बड़ा-सा था। उसके पिता ने उसे यह टिप्पणी करने पर डाँटा था। उसके पिता ने उसे निरुत्साहित भी किया। उसके पिता के मित्र ने उसे सलाह दी कि वह एक दो विचित्र तुम्बे ही संग्रह करे। केवल संग्रह करने का कोई लाभ नहीं।
सेबे को अपनी पसन्द का तुम्बा मिल गया-एक दिन सेबे ने एक वृद्ध को फल-सब्जियाँ बेचते देखा । उसके पास तुम्बों की एक लड़ी भी थी। उनके बीच सेबे ने एक छोटा-सा तुम्बा देखा । वह उत्तेजित हो गया । वह महिला उसे दस सेन में देने को तैयार थी। सेबे के पास पैसे न थे। उसने महिला को वह तुम्बा उसके लिए रोके रखने के लिए कहा। वह दौड़कर पैसे लेने घर गया। उसने तुम्बा मोल ले लिया।
तुम्बा मुसीबत बन गया-सेबे तुम्बे को चमकाने में हर समय लगा रहता था । वह उसे स्कूल भी ले जाता था। नैतिक शास्त्र का पाठ था परन्तु सेबे तुम्बे को सीट के नीचे चमका रहा था। अध्यापक जापान के अन्य भाग का रहने वाला था । वह तुम्बे संग्रह करना अच्छा न समझता था । वह सेबे पर क्रुद्ध हुआ और उसने तुम्बा जब्त कर लिया।
सेबे का पिता सभी तुम्बे तोड़ डालता है-अध्यापक सेबे के घर गया । सेबे का पिता बढ़ई की दुकान पर काम करता था। वह अभी घर नहीं लौटा था। अध्यापक ने सेबे की शिकायत उसकी माँ से की। उसने उससे कहा कि मूर्खतापूर्ण गतिविधियों से बच्चों को दूर रखना माता-पिता का कर्त्तव्य है।
जब सेबे का पिता घर आया, उसे पता चला कि अध्यापक ने क्या कहा था। उसने सेबे को डाँटा और पीटा । फिर उसने वे सब तुम्बे तोड़ डाले जो सेबे ने बड़े ध्यान से चमकाए थे। इससे सेबे की तुम्बे संग्रह करने की
धुन का अन्त हो गया।
जब्त किया हुआ तुम्बा-अध्यापक ने जब्त किया हुआ तुम्बा एक चपरासी को दे दिया जिसने कुछ दिन उसे अपनी झोपड़ी में रखा। एक दिन चपरासी को कुछ धन की आवश्यकता पड़ी । यह तुम्बा लेकर एक कलाकृति विक्रेता के पास ले गया । कुछ कठोर सौदेबाजी के पश्चात् कलाकृति विक्रेता ने चपरासी को उस तुम्बे के पचास येन दिए । परन्तु चपरासी ने इस बात को गुप्त रखा। बाद में कलाकृति विक्रेता ने वह तुम्बा एक धनी संग्रहकर्ता को छ: सौ येन में बेचा ।
सेबे चित्रकारी करने लगा-सेबे तुम्बे संग्रह न कर सकता था। अब वह चित्र बनाने लगा। यद्यपि उसका पिता उसे अब भी डाँटता और निरुत्साहित करता है।
